Choir, orchestra and band groups aren’t the only music makers at our school. A new sound is emerging from within our walls in the form of three students who have harmonized their passions to form Trio Ninjas, a band that expresses their love for music.

The group’s members, Heru Mason (SubHeru), Kelan Freeman (GRIM $avage), and Habesh Kisanga (Jozitanz) have manifested what they describe to be a “new wave” of music. The group rejects labels and strives to display their originality with their unique sound.

“My interest in music is because it gives me the freedom to say things that I couldn’t say just in a regular conversation,” Freeman said. “I can put sounds behind it. I can put true feelings and emotion inside it.”

Although the band wasn’t officially formed until sophomore year after multiple freestyle music sessions at Kisanga’s house, each member had been interested in music growing up. While Mason belongs to a family he calls “music heads,” Kisanga developed his interest in music through exposure to MTV and musicians he looked up to.

“I started writing music when I was 11, but I didn’t take it seriously until I came to the states because I used to live in Africa,” Kisanga said. “Back then I had an accent and everything and I was like, ‘People are going to make fun of me so I have to get serious with it.’”

Most of the band’s musical inspiration comes from everyday experiences and the world around them. For example, their song “Time to Go to Work” attempts to motivate others to look at their jobs positively.

“Sometimes you just have to get hyped up to go to work and accept it,” Freeman said.

For now the band is staying local with their music and videos, but they said they have big dreams for the future.

“I want us to go major,” Kisanga said. “Some people, they just do it; they get there, and they just relax. We don’t want to relax, we want to go far with this.”

The Trio Ninjas current and upcoming music can be found on YouTube and SoundCloud.

“I really want to just give people music they can enjoy,” Freeman said. “No matter who you are, no matter what you look like, no matter how bad your day was, you can just turn on some Trio Ninjas and just enjoy us.”

***As of 1/25/17, Habesh Kisanga. has moved to Seattle. However, the band said they will continue producing music together.***
