The student section is dressed in black. The Friday night lights are shining bright. The game is on.

The varsity football team played against R.L. Turner on Friday, September 29. By halftime, the team was winning 14-7, and it was time for the halftime performances by the schools’ respective drill teams and bands.

“The show is called King’s Fall,” senior guard member Claire Cathey said, “and it’s about just that: the endgame in a chess game. Eventually the king too will fall, ending the game.”

This year is a state year for the band, so naturally they’ve worked as hard as possible to make the show wonderful, which includes adding different features to the show.

“This year’s show is unique because we have cool props and a lot of visuals,” senior band member Meg Hawkins said. “And the flutes have a countermelody in the ballad section of the show that is very beautiful.”

However, the music is not the only unique part of the show.

“In colorguard, we’re spinning swing flags, six and seven foot flags and rifles in our show.” Cathey said. “The range of equipment for this year’s show is especially cool because for the first time everyone will be on weapon line.”

On October 17, the Mustang Band received an Excellent rating at UIL, held at Pennington Field in HEBISD.
