All eyes are on Junior Keith Mathews, varsity swim captain, as he steps in the pool and prepares to dive.

He swings his arms back and forth, cruising along the lanes with powerful rhythmic strokes until he reaches the other end.

On Saturday, Feb. 3, and the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Regionals Swimming and Diving gathers together at the University of Texas at Austin.

“This competition is something that I have been serious about for awhile,” Mathews said. “I practiced for a rigorous amount and I powered throughout.”

In the end, Mathews fell 0.04 seconds behind one place in order to advance to UIL State level.

“After watching Keith swim, I still believe that he could’ve made it to state,” Junior Caydon Mosley said. “He was super close to advance but he didn’t which was really sad.”

However, Mathews beat CHS alumnus 2011 Matt Sullian 22.10 record and 2008 Austin Teague 48.90 record and in total broke CHS’s history record on the 50 freestyle and on the 100 freestyle race.

Overall, this placed Mathews among the top 25 swimmers in Texas.

“I am happy whether or not he made it to state,” head swim coach Bunker Hill said. “His natural born leadership lead him to where he is and I know it will push him even further next year’s State Swim meet.”
